On Tuesday, August 22, Indian deep-sea fishermen from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu were attacked by pirates who were supposedly from Sri Lanka.

IANS was informed by coastal police sources in Tamil Nadu that the pirates arrived in the middle of the sea in three boats and attacked the fishermen with bricks and rods.

Fishermen attack

Notably, the Tamil Nadu government has raised the problem of Tamil Nadu fishermen being regularly detained by the Sri Lankan Navy with the Union External Affairs Ministry several times.

Fishermen from Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, and Thoothukudi had complained to the state and federal governments that the Sri Lankan Navy had detained them and taken their expensive, mechanized boats.

According to highly placed sources in the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister‘s office, the state administration would raise the issue with the Union government to inform the Sri Lankan government of the situation.

Fisherman Antony Fernandez from Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu told IANS that they have been fishing in the middle of the ocean despite the risk of being detained by the Sri Lankan navy and occasionally by maritime pirates.
