The Sri Lankan Navy has detained nine fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) while fishing. The arrested individuals were taken to Sri Lanka for further legal proceedings, and their boats were seized.

Local fishermen and their representatives are expressing frustration over these recurring arrests and the confiscation of their boats. The Tamil Nadu Fishermen Association is organizing protests, including a road blockade, to draw attention to their plight and push for better protection and resolution of the issues faced by fishermen in the area.

In a recent development, nine fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly breaching the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). The fishermen, all from Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district, were reportedly fishing in waters claimed by Sri Lanka when they were detained. Their boats have also been confiscated, adding to the ongoing tension in the region.

The Tamil Nadu Fishermen Association has voiced strong concerns about these repeated incidents, highlighting the constant fear and challenges faced by local fishermen. The association is planning to stage protests and road blockades to address these issues and demand action from both Indian and Sri Lankan authorities.

The arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy underscores the need for a diplomatic solution to resolve fishing disputes and ensure the safety and rights of fishermen in the region.
