The House of Commons approves a motion regarding “foreign interference”

  • A private member’s motion was approved by the House of Commons in Canada.
  • Opposition MP Sukh Dhaliwal moved the proposal, and eight other MPs also supported it.
  • The motion seeks to draw attention to the increasing threats, intimidation, and meddling from nations.

A private member’s motion named “Political Interference, Violence or Intimidation on Canadian Soil” was approved by the House of Commons in Canada.

The motion claims that there was an Indian connection to the June 18, 2018, murder of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Opposition MP Sukh Dhaliwal, who is Indo-Canadian, moved the proposal, and eight other MPs also supported it.

Foreign interference

Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, some Cabinet members, and Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the opposition Conservative Party, voted in favor of it with 326 votes against. The motion seeks to draw attention to the increasing threats, intimidation, and meddling from nations including China, Russia, Iran, India, and others.

Following Trudeau’s statement in the House on September 18 that there were “credible allegations” of a potential link between Indian agents and the murder, bilateral ties were affected by the death of Nijjar, the principal organizer for the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which was found murdered in Surrey, British Columbia.

The resolution was opposed by the Canada India Foundation (CIF), a prominent Indo-Canadian organization because it would harm the relationship between India and Canada and hurt both local and international politics.
