How to prevent the increasing number of cardiac arrest cases in India

  • The growing number of instances is extremely concerning to the Cardiological Society of India (CSI).
  • The quick action of bystanders is essential to increasing the survival rates from cardiac arrest.
  • They concluded that teaching people how to save lives by using CPR could save a great deal of lives.

In India, cases of sudden cardiac arrest account for thousands of deaths annually and are a major cause of death. The growing number of instances, especially among younger populations, is extremely concerning to the Cardiological Society of India (CSI).

The quick action of bystanders who have received CPR training is essential to increasing the survival rates from cardiac arrest (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).

CPR

Research has indicated that initiating CPR quickly can increase a person experiencing cardiac arrest’s odds of survival by two or three times. Nonetheless, basic CPR training is still required for a sizable section of the population in India, where CPR usage is still underutilized.

The Cardiological Society of India, in collaboration with SATS Academy (the Society for Emergency Medicine in India), has initiated CALS (CPR as a Life Skill Initiative) to meet this pressing need. The program aims to educate people about SCD and teach them the fundamentals of CPR. Sun Pharma’s patient awareness campaign, “Making India Heart Strong,” provides support for the project.

The main goal was to raise awareness of how important CPR is for handling cardiac emergencies. According to Dr. Sridhar Kasturi, a heart attack is characterized by a blockage of the heart’s blood veins, whereas sudden cardiac death refers to the heart-stopping its pumping. Dr. Mrinal Kanti Das described the symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest, stressing how critical it is to identify these symptoms to start CPR quickly and discuss any possible hazards involved.

Drs. Shridhar Kasturi and Mrinal Kanti Das argued in favor of universal CPR instruction in a variety of settings, such as communities, workplaces, and schools. They concluded that teaching people how to save lives by using CPR could save a great deal of lives.
