Today is the BRICS Summit 2023, PM Modi in Johannesburg

  • BRICS Summit 2023 will be held in Johannesburg from Tuesday to Thursday.
  • The summit will give participants the chance to talk about development-related topics.
  • The BRICS nations will meet in person for the first time since 2019 in Johannesburg.

India’s, China’s, Brazil’s, and Russia’s top diplomat will all be present at the 15th BRICS Summit, which will be held in Johannesburg from Tuesday to Thursday.

In contrast to Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has just arrived in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already left for South Africa. The summit will give participants the chance to talk about development-related topics and concerns that affect the Global South.

BRICS Summit 2023

The BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—will meet in person for the first time since 2019 in Johannesburg. The city is decorated with BRICS Summit banners and posters, and security measures have been increased close to the convention center. There are also tall digital screens placed up throughout the South African city with images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi will interact with the nation’s Indian community. Naresh Ramatar, a member of the Sawubonamodiji Welcome Committee, stated that they will present PM Modi with a 3-D model of the new Swami Narayan Mandir, which is anticipated to be finished in Johannesburg by 2025.

The BRICS leaders will concentrate on strategies to lessen reliance on the US dollar. Concerns have been raised that the alliance is attempting to establish itself as a counterweight to the Group of Seven because China has been pushing for new members to be admitted, supported by Russia and South Africa.

Sergey Lavrov, the foreign minister of Russia, has arrived in Johannesburg for the 15th BRICS Summit. President Vladimir Putin, however, will only be present virtually due to an arrest order issued for him by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes.

As the institution is under pressure to raise and lend more money in local currencies, the development bank of the BRICS nations intends to issue its first Indian rupee bond by October. Nearly 20 nations have formally requested membership in the BRICS, out of the more than 40 nations that have expressed interest.
