As more U.S. school districts explore the idea of a four-day week, new research suggests the academic payoff may not be as promising as hoped.

Meanwhile, the rationale behind adopting a shorter week often stems from financial necessity or staff shortages. Districts like Finley in Washington have turned to the four-day model to offset failed levies and save money, estimating annual savings of up to $200,000.

The Four-Day School Week Debate: Savings vs. Student Success

One of the most pressing issues tied to the four-day school week is the question of instructional time. Although some districts lengthen daily schedules to meet state requirements, experts warn that compressing five days into four may dilute the quality of instruction. Lost classroom hours could mean less time for individual support and enrichment, especially for students already struggling academically.

Beyond academics, the shift also affects student routines. Without structured programming on the fifth day, many students face a gap in supervision and engagement. This can disproportionately affect low-income families, where parents may lack the resources for alternative care or extracurriculars. School leaders in some districts are actively seeking grants to support Friday childcare programs.

Teacher retention is often cited as a positive outcome of the four-day week. Shorter workweeks can lead to increased morale and reduced burnout, making the profession more attractive. However, not all educators favor the change, particularly if the longer days lead to fatigue or if the additional day off is absorbed by unpaid prep work.

Despite growing popularity — over 2,100 schools have adopted the model — urban and suburban districts remain cautious. The majority of existing research focuses on rural areas, creating a gap in understanding how the schedule would function in more densely populated, diverse environments. This lack of data makes it challenging for policymakers to make fully informed decisions.

While the four-day school week offers financial and staffing advantages, its long-term academic impact remains uncertain. More inclusive, outcome-driven research is needed to determine its true effectiveness.
