Despite concerns raised by a review of the indie film’s unorthodox promotional campaign, Andrea Riseborough will retain her Oscar nomination for To Leslie. The British star’s best actress nomination sent shockwaves through the industry by Hollywood’s most prestigious awards group which is unveiled last week
Despite the praise she received from critics, her performance had only grossed $27,000 at the box office and didn’t benefit from an expensive and highly visible marketing campaign widely regarded as crucial to an Oscars victory. Sarah Paulson, Edward Norton, and Gwyneth Paltrow mounted an intense, last-minute social media campaign to promote the movie, about a Texas mother who won the lottery but wasted her fortune and became an alcoholic.

Whether any Academy rules against lobbying and disparaging rivals were broken is the debate that raged in Hollywood. The Oscar-awarding group said in a Tuesday statement, “The Academy has determined the activity in question does not rise to the level that the film’s nomination should be canceled.”
“We found some concerns about social media and outreach campaign tactics. The responsible parties are directly addressed to these tactics.”

The votes of the 9,500 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decide the Oscars award. Each and every Academy branch determines the Nominations, and also around 1,300 actor members of the group are voted for the Oscar nominations for actors including Riseborough.
These members encourage e-mails and social media posts to vote for Riseborough. According to one Instagram post supporting To Leslie, rising stars such as Danielle Deadwyler and Viola Davis were “getting nominated anyway,” so members could vote for them instead.
Deadwyler and Davis both are black and also ended up receiving nominations. In 2023, No Black stars received lead actress nods.
According to the Academy, the campaign regulations ensure a fair and ethical award process – these are its core values.
In the review, the reviewers emphasized the need for clarification of certain aspects of the regulations so that a more respectful, inclusive, and unbiased campaigning framework can be created. Any changes will not be made until after the 12th March Oscars ceremony.
