Hussain Shameem, the prosecutor of the Maldives, was attacked

Male, the Maldives‘ capital city, saw a vicious attack on prosecutor general Hussain Shameem by unidentified miscreants. Shameem was struck with a hammer by an unknown assailant while he was traveling to work.

The incident happened without warning. Currently receiving treatment at the ADK hospital in the nation, the prosecutor’s left arm sustained damage in the incident. The status of Shameem is stable.

The assault takes place amid a protracted political impasse between the opposition in the Maldives and the government, which aims to remove President Mohamed Muizzu.

The police have made a connection between the attack and the standoff, stating that they believe it may have something to do with one of Shammem’s past criminal cases.

The Maldives Parliament saw wild scenes on Sunday as the opposition legislators and the ruling alliance argued, disrupting important deliberations. On social media, several images and videos depicting the disorderly conduct went viral.

The Supreme Court has been petitioned by the Maldivian administration regarding the recent modification to the Parliament’s standing regulations that permit opposition legislators to remove the President from office.
