Due to the heavy rain, Dubai has seen a notable spike in cold and flu cases, especially among youngsters. Rainy weather has been linked to acute respiratory illnesses like the flu and COVID-19, and people typically avoid the outdoors during erratic weather.

The majority of cases are in children under five, and older adults over 60 are complaining of joint discomfort, high fever, colds, and coughing.

Increase in flu cases

It is recommended that parents keep a closer eye on their children’s health and look out for signs such as joint pain, high temperature, cold, and cough. Concerns about waterborne illnesses highlight the significance of maintaining proper hygiene and having access to clean water.

In addition, rain can spread infections carried by mosquitoes and other pathogens. Waterborne infections can thrive as a result of flooding and water stagnation, which can result in vomiting, diarrhea, and respiratory problems. Since they are more inclined to play in and near water than other age groups, children are more susceptible to these injuries.

Illnesses can include nausea, vomiting, cramps in the stomach, fever, headaches, and muscle aches. Prevention is key, and children as young as six months old should have yearly flu shots in addition to practicing excellent hygiene.

In addition to reminding kids to stay away from stagnant water and make sure there is enough air, parents should also consider sending their kids home from school during periods of severe rain.

Adjusting children’s routines and environments, dressing them for the weather, limiting outdoor activities, keeping living areas dry and clean, using a dehumidifier, and routinely cleaning and disinfecting surfaces are all ways to lower health risks during inclement weather.
