- Sudden monsoon showers flood roads and underpasses across Delhi-NCR.
- IMD forecasts more rain, thunderstorms, and cooler-than-average temperatures.
- Daily life disrupted with traffic snarls and viral visuals of waterlogged streets.
Delhi-NCR woke up to widespread disruption on Thursday as overnight monsoon rains left large swathes of the capital and its neighboring cities flooded.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate showers are expected to persist throughout the day, accompanied by occasional lightning and thunder.
Relentless Rains Cripple Delhi-NCR: Traffic, Flooding, and IMD Alerts
Roads turned into rivers overnight, with stretches like Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Delhi-Meerut Expressway, and Nehru Place completely choked. Office-goers were among the worst affected, stuck in long jams or stranded due to halted public transport. Emergency responders were deployed in some areas to assist with water evacuation and traffic management.
IMD’s forecast indicates a continuation of the wet spell with temperatures dipping to a pleasant range of 23–25°C. The department has emphasized the possibility of brief but intense showers, especially during afternoon hours. Thunderstorms may disrupt outdoor plans, and residents are advised to stay indoors during peak rainfall.
Local infrastructure struggled to cope with the intensity of rain, particularly in low-lying colonies and older parts of the city. Municipal bodies have been criticized for inadequate pre-monsoon preparation. In places like Pragati Maidan and RK Puram, stagnant water near power lines and bus stops posed added risks to pedestrians.
While the rainfall brought relief from heat, it also reignited debates around urban planning and climate resilience in Delhi-NCR. Experts have called for urgent upgrades to the city’s drainage systems, pointing to increasing unpredictability in weather patterns. With climate change intensifying monsoon variability, the current situation serves as a warning for future preparedness.
The heavy monsoon showers have delivered both comfort and chaos—cooling Delhi-NCR but also exposing serious urban vulnerabilities that demand immediate attention.
