Passenger Hurt as Water Slide Panel Breaks on Cruise

  • A passenger was injured after a water slide panel broke aboard Icon of the Seas.
  • Video shows guests yelling “stop the slide” as water poured onto the deck.
  • The slide has been shut for the rest of the trip pending an investigation.

Panic rippled through Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas this week when part of a high-speed water slide broke mid-ride, injuring a male passenger.

Footage shared by other guests shows a jagged opening in the slide’s side, with water streaming through the breach and splashing onto the deck below.

Mid-Sea Scare: Royal Caribbean Water Slide Fails During Ride

The Icon of the Seas—billed as the largest cruise ship in the world—had departed Miami on August 2 for a weeklong Caribbean voyage. The ship is home to record-breaking attractions, including towering slides designed for adrenaline seekers. However, Thursday’s mishap turned what was meant to be a moment of fun into a serious safety concern.

Witnesses recall hearing a sudden cracking sound before water began surging through the slide’s broken panel. Many guests, already queued for their turn, stepped back in shock, while crew members moved swiftly to secure the attraction.

Royal Caribbean stated that passenger safety is its highest priority, adding that they will implement any required fixes before reopening the ride. Similar maritime attractions face unique engineering challenges, as constant motion, sun exposure, and salt air can stress materials over time.

This incident also serves as a reminder of the risks tied to ever-larger, more complex cruise ship entertainment offerings. While most onboard rides operate safely for years, even minor equipment failures at sea demand immediate attention to prevent larger disasters.

What began as a thrilling ride on the open ocean ended in a moment of chaos—one that will likely lead to renewed scrutiny of cruise ship attractions worldwide.
