- India evacuates 3,170 nationals amid Iran-Israel conflict under Operation Sindhu
- Evacuees moved via land to Jordan, Egypt, then flown by IAF C-17 and chartered flights
- Ceasefire prompts winding down of operations, but vigilance continues
In response to escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, the Government of India launched Operation Sindhu, a high-priority evacuation mission to safeguard its citizens. Over 3,100 Indians were rescued from conflict zones using a mix of military aircraft and chartered commercial flights.
By June 24, 2025, 594 Indians had been evacuated from Israel alone, while 2,576 citizens, along with a handful of Sri Lankan and Nepalese nationals, were flown out of Iran.
India’s Operation Sindhu Safely Airlifts 3,170 Nationals as Iran-Israel Ceasefire Takes Effect
The Indian government demonstrated both agility and diplomatic foresight as it navigated the volatile security landscape in the Middle East. Using C-17 Globemaster aircraft and private charters, India ensured a swift and safe return for its citizens caught between two warring nations. These evacuations included people of varied backgrounds—students, professionals, and pilgrims—underscoring the inclusiveness of the mission.
Critical to the success of Operation Sindhu was the strategic use of land transit points through Jordan and Egypt, which allowed evacuees to escape immediate conflict zones. From these countries, evacuees were boarded onto flights bound for India. Notably, the mission received operational support from Indian missions in Tehran, Amman, Cairo, and Yerevan, all working in unison.
The situation escalated sharply after the United States conducted strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, prompting retaliatory missile attacks between Iran and Israel. Amid mounting fears of a broader regional war, India’s evacuation strategy prioritized quick action over bureaucratic delays. The IAF’s C-17 fleet, often used in humanitarian relief, became the backbone of this critical operation.
Following the ceasefire, the Indian Embassy in Iran stated it is gradually suspending the evacuation efforts. However, Indian authorities continue to monitor developments closely, with contingency plans in place should new risks emerge. The MEA emphasized that the safety of Indian nationals abroad remains a non-negotiable priority.
Operation Sindhu reflects India’s unwavering commitment to the protection of its citizens, even in the most volatile global scenarios. The swift execution and eventual safe return of thousands is a testament to effective planning, coordination, and diplomatic resolve.
