Officials in Western Australia are searching for a radioactive capsule

A tiny but potentially most harmful radio-active capsule is lost in the city of Perth while it is transported from a mine to a depot on a truck. So Authorities made a search in West Australia.

Emergency services said they have called on the Common Wealth and provided assistance for other states and also hampered the lack of weapons.

Radio-active Capsule

The Department of Fire and Emergency Service has made a search to find a capsule of 6 millimeters to 8 millimeters in size, and the team with handheld radiation and detection services along a busy freight route of 37 kilometers(22 miles). It is believed to fall off from the Rio Tinto Mine in Newman to the Perth Suburb of Malaga, which is a 1400 kilometers journey, and it has fallen by the backside of the truck.

Authorities are determining the exact route the driver took by using the GPS data of the truck. They are concerned about the solid capsule is potentially away from the search area and may be logged into another vehicle’s tyre.

  • A tiny but potentially harmful radio-active capsule is lost.
  • Police determined the accidental incident.
  • Authorities ruled out the theft at the depot.
  • Long-term exposure to the capsule causes cancer.

The capsule is packaged and transported safely to the depot under the contract of the expert radio-active handler and they were not told about the missing until Wednesday, said Rio Tinto.

Western Australia’s government decided to wait for two days and to inform the public on Friday. So Chief Health Officer Andrew Robertson defended that.

According to him, it appears the vibration of the truck affected the gauge’s integrity, resulting in it falling apart and the source coming out of it. The investigations will took for the capsule at the mine site, the gauge handling, the transport route, and procedures at the depot. Police determined the accidental incident but authorities ruled out the theft at the depot.

Radiation gauges are used for the small silver cylinder, which is 19-becquerel cesium 137 ceramic sources. Robertson said the capsule emits the equivalent of 10 X-rays and the public stay at least 5 meters away. Expert says the capsule cannot be weaponized but long-term exposure could cause cancer. Robertson said their concern is someone picks it and keeps itself not knowing.
