Zverev Battles Disruption to Secure Semifinal at Canadian Open

  • Alexander Zverev defeats defending champion Alexei Popyrin in three sets.
  • An unruly fan briefly disrupts Zverev’s momentum during the final game.
  • Zverev will face Karen Khachanov in the Toronto Masters semifinals.

Alexander Zverev displayed poise and grit to reach his 21st Masters 1000 semifinal, defeating Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 6-7 (8/10), 6-4, 6-3 in a tense quarterfinal encounter at the 2025 Canadian Open.

A dramatic twist unfolded during the final game as Zverev, serving for the match at 5-3, was momentarily rattled by a disruptive fan whose shouting interrupted play.

Zverev Battles Past Popyrin and Chaos to Set Up Toronto Semifinal Showdown

Karen Khachanov, Zverev’s next opponent, earned his semifinal berth with a straight-sets victory over young American Alex Michelsen, 6-4, 7-6 (7/3). Khachanov showcased resilience, fending off multiple break points and capitalizing on critical moments to maintain control. This will be his fourth appearance in a Canadian Open semifinal, and he’s seeking his first final at this level since 2018.

Zverev’s road to the semifinals also marks a personal milestone — his 40th win of the season. With a consistent performance on hard courts leading into the US Open, the German has quietly built momentum while maintaining top-tier form. His previous Canadian Open title came in 2017, but this year marks his first semifinal appearance in Toronto since then.

The match against Popyrin was a showcase of high-level shot-making from both players. Popyrin, despite the loss, pushed Zverev with aggressive baseline play and clutch serving in the first set. However, as the match wore on, Zverev’s experience and tactical variety began to wear down the Australian, particularly during extended rallies in the second and third sets.

Security at the venue responded swiftly to the fan disruption in the final game, ensuring player safety and match integrity. While the interruption could have derailed a less composed athlete, Zverev’s focus and professionalism ensured a swift recovery. The incident added a layer of tension to an already intense contest, further highlighting Zverev’s mental toughness.

With a semifinal clash against Khachanov ahead, Zverev’s form and focus suggest he’s primed for another deep Masters run — and possibly his second Canadian crown.
