The Supreme Court declined to get involved in the matter of Senthil Balaji being transferred to a private hospital in Chennai. The Madras High Court’s judgement allowing Balaji to be discharged from the government hospital was challenged in court by the Enforcement Directorate.
Balaji was detained as a result of an Enforcement Case Information Register (ECIR) that was submitted in 2021 in accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Balaji may be Transferred to a Private Hospital

The Madras High Court’s ruling permitting Balaji to be transferred from the government hospital to a private hospital in Chennai following his detention by the ED was challenged on Monday by the Enforcement Directorate in the Supreme Court.

Balaji was taken into custody by the ED in relation to an Enforcement Case Information Register (ECIR) that was submitted in 2021 in accordance with the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The local police had filed three FIRs against him in 2018, alleging that he had participated in a cash-for-jobs scheme while serving as the transport minister in Jayalalithaa’s Cabinet in 2015. These FIRs formed the basis for the ECIR, which was filed on the basis of those three FIRs.
When the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government was in power from 2011 to 2015, he was the transport minister at the time of the allegations.
