World Lung Cancer Day 2023: Lifestyle choices reduce risk

The annual World Lung Cancer Day on August 1st strives to increase public awareness of the dangerous condition.

Smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution, and gas exposure are some of the leading causes of lung cancer. An individual’s risk of contracting the illness may also be increased by family history and genetic abnormalities.

People should avoid exposure to recognized carcinogens, such as tobacco products, secondhand smoke, and bad air quality behaviors, to lower their risk of developing lung cancer. For people who are at higher risk due to family history or other risk factors, regular screenings and doctor visits are crucial.

Several lifestyle modifications are advised by Dr. Meenu Walia, Senior Director of Medical Oncology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, to lower the chance of developing lung cancer.

These include giving up smoking, avoiding secondhand smoke, staying away from agents that cause cancer while working, breathing in air pollution, and using cooking fuel. consuming less processed food, red meat in moderation, and sugary drinks; swapping sugar for jaggery (Gud) as a lung-clearing agent; getting frequent exercise; consuming enough of water; and taking precautions against air pollution.

It is essential to educate oneself and one’s loved ones about the risks and symptoms of lung cancer to fight this deadly condition.
