Confusion Over Tax Filing Deadline: Clarification on Extension Claims

  • Income Tax Deadline: The due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for FY2023-24 remains July 31, 2024.
  • Press Seva Portal: An extension to August 31, 2024, applies to annual returns for press publications, not to ITRs.
  • Clarification Issued: PIB confirms that social media claims about an ITR filing extension are false.

Recent misinformation on social media has led to confusion regarding the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs). Despite claims suggesting an extension to August 31, 2024, the official deadline remains July 31, 2024.

The confusion originated from an advisory about the Press Seva Portal, which pertains to press-related filings and does not affect tax returns.

No Extension for Income Tax Returns: Deadline Remains July 31

The confusion arose from an advisory issued by the Office of the Press Registrar General of India. This advisory extended the deadline for annual returns related to press publications through the Press Seva Portal to August 31, 2024. It is important to note that this extension is specific to press filings and does not impact income tax deadlines.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has since clarified that the social media claims regarding the ITR deadline extension are false. Taxpayers must adhere to the original deadline to avoid any penalties. The new tax regime, introduced to simplify tax processes, does not alter the current filing deadlines.

To avoid any misunderstandings, it’s crucial for individuals to verify deadlines through official sources. Filing your ITR on time is essential to avoid additional charges and ensure compliance with tax regulations.

Ensure you file your Income Tax Return by July 31, 2024, to avoid penalties. Misinformation regarding an extended deadline has been debunked; no changes have been made to the official due date.

“Ensure you file your Income Tax Return by July 31, 2024, to avoid penalties.”
