Australia Supports Lao Teachers with New Development Videos

  • New teacher development videos focus on classroom management and teaching Lao to non-Lao speakers.
  • Videos filmed in remote classrooms offer real-life examples of effective teaching methods.
  • The initiative aims to support teachers facing challenges like overcrowded and multigrade classrooms.

The Ministry of Education and Sports of Lao PDR, with support from Australia through the BEQUAL program, has launched two new teacher development videos designed to address common classroom challenges.

The development videos are part of an ongoing effort to equip Lao teachers with the tools they need to improve their teaching methods.

Empowering Teachers in Remote Laos: A Collaboration with Australia

The teacher development video initiative, supported by Australia’s BEQUAL program, aims to provide Lao teachers with practical tools to enhance their teaching practices. These videos are designed to address the unique challenges faced by teachers in Lao PDR, such as overcrowded classes, multigrade settings, and the language barrier for non-Lao-speaking students. By offering step-by-step demonstrations of effective techniques, the program helps teachers improve their classroom management and teaching methods.

The two latest videos focus on essential topics: classroom management and Lao language teaching techniques. Classroom management, a crucial skill for engaging students and maintaining order in multigrade classrooms, is broken down into six key strategies that teachers can use across all subjects. These strategies aim to create an environment conducive to active student engagement, improving both classroom dynamics and learning outcomes.

A key feature of these videos is their real-world applicability. Filmed in remote districts like Kham in Xiangkhouang province and Xaythani in Vientiane Capital, the videos showcase examples from actual classrooms. This ensures that the strategies shown are not only theoretical but proven to work in similar contexts. Teachers can view these examples and adapt the strategies to their own classrooms.

In addition to their instructional value, the videos are also accessible, with sign language dubbing included to support diverse learning needs. This inclusivity ensures that all teachers, regardless of ability, can benefit from the resources, making it an essential tool in ongoing professional development.

The teacher development video initiative, supported by Australia, is an essential resource for Lao teachers, equipping them with the skills to tackle classroom challenges and foster a positive learning environment.

“We want to keep teachers motivated and empowered so they remain committed to their vital roles teaching the future generation of leaders and thinkers.”
