Europe’s New Sanctions Target Russia’s Oil and Intelligence

  • EU and UK unveil new sanctions targeting Russia’s energy income and intelligence operatives.
  • Over 400 Russian-linked oil tankers are now banned from EU ports and waters.
  • Ukraine rescues more children from Russian-occupied regions under “Bring Kids Back UA.”

In a powerful joint move, the European Union and the United Kingdom have escalated sanctions on Russia, zeroing in on its vital energy sector and intelligence networks.

Meanwhile, the UK has sanctioned 18 Russian intelligence officers accused of orchestrating deadly operations in Ukraine and targeting dissidents abroad.

Sanctions Deepen: EU and UK Target Russia’s Energy Lifeline and Covert Ops

The sanctions package also marks the EU’s first direct financial pressure on Russia’s dormant Nord Stream gas pipelines, discouraging any future revenue generation from the infrastructure. This symbolic yet strategic move further isolates Russia’s energy sector, which has been propping up its war chest since 2022. Even Rosneft’s operations in India are affected, underscoring the EU’s intent to close off all backdoor trade channels.

Internal EU negotiations, however, revealed growing tensions. Slovakia initially blocked the deal over concerns about its heavy dependence on Russian gas. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz intervened personally, engaging in daily talks with Slovak officials to secure consensus. This tug-of-war underscores the challenge of balancing collective punishment of Russia with national energy needs.

In parallel, Ukraine continues its humanitarian mission to rescue children from Russian-held areas. The latest group, including a three-year-old girl, faced psychological abuse and pressure to assimilate into Russian systems. According to Ukrainian authorities, the rescued children were threatened, interrogated, and even tortured for defying Russian schooling and cultural imposition.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has forcibly deported over 20,000 Ukrainian children, with just 1,400 successfully returned so far. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s “Bring Kids Back UA” campaign remains central to countering this shadow war against Ukrainian identity. Each rescued child stands as a symbol of defiance and survival.

As Europe tightens its sanctions and Ukraine rescues its future generation, the growing unity among allies marks a firm stand against aggression—both economic and humanitarian.
