Rocky the Black Bear Rescued from Abuse in Pakistan

  • Rocky, a black bear, was illegally kept and forced into 35 fights in Punjab, Pakistan.
  • Four Paws intervened, removing his chains and nose ring, but he has severe injuries.
  • Pakistan has a history of poor animal welfare, with past cases of neglected wildlife.

Pakistan’s weak enforcement of animal welfare laws has once again come under scrutiny after the rescue of Rocky, a seven-year-old black bear. He was subjected to brutal abuse in illegal bear fights before authorities intervened.

Rocky’s rescue sheds light on the persisting issue of animal cruelty in the country. While bear fighting is illegal, it remains a widespread underground practice.

Pakistan’s Animal Welfare Crisis: The Story of Rocky the Bear

Rocky’s story is a tragic reminder of the cruelty animals endure due to weak enforcement of protection laws. Despite the illegality of bear fighting in Pakistan, many bears continue to be abused in staged fights for entertainment. The lack of proper sanctuaries further complicates the rehabilitation of rescued animals.

Four Paws, a global welfare organization, has played a key role in helping mistreated wildlife in Pakistan. Their intervention in Rocky’s case, including critical surgery and removing his restraints, highlights the ongoing efforts to improve animal welfare. However, many other animals remain in dire conditions, awaiting similar rescues.

The country has faced criticism for its treatment of captive animals, with repeated incidents of neglect and mistreatment. The case of a Himalayan brown bear couple, rescued in 2020 from Islamabad’s poorly maintained zoo, is one of many examples showcasing the systemic issues in wildlife care.

Without stringent laws and dedicated enforcement, Pakistan’s wildlife will continue to suffer. Organizations like Four Paws provide hope, but a long-term solution requires government action, public awareness, and a shift in cultural attitudes toward animal rights.

Rocky’s rescue is a step forward, but real change will only come with strict enforcement of animal protection laws and better sanctuary facilities for wildlife in Pakistan.
