Atishi Leaves Kejriwal’s Chair Vacant, BJP Calls It a Political Drama

  • Atishi takes charge as Delhi’s Chief Minister but leaves Kejriwal’s chair vacant.
  • She compares her role to Bharat’s rule in Ramayana, awaiting Kejriwal’s return.
  • BJP criticizes the move, calling it a “mockery of the Constitution” and political drama.

After being sworn in as Delhi’s Chief Minister, Atishi decided to keep Arvind Kejriwal’s chair vacant in her office, symbolizing her interim tenure until the 2025 elections.

Drawing a parallel to the Ramayana, she likened her role to Bharat’s, who ruled Ayodhya in Lord Ram’s absence.

Atishi’s Vacant Chair Gesture Sparks BJP Criticism

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not view this symbolism kindly. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP IT cell, accused Atishi and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of engaging in political theatrics, suggesting Kejriwal still holds power behind the scenes despite his official resignation. Malviya further criticized the move as a disrespect to the constitutional office of Chief Minister, labeling it a “mockery of democracy.”

In her remarks, Atishi lauded Kejriwal’s decision to step down, portraying it as an example of political dignity. She pledged to uphold his legacy during her brief tenure, assuring the public that Kejriwal’s absence is only temporary. Her gesture is seen as a statement of loyalty, asserting that the Delhi government still belongs to Kejriwal, and she is merely a steward until his return.

The BJP was quick to criticize this move, with Amit Malviya calling it a political charade. In a post on social media platform X, Malviya stated that Atishi’s actions undermine her role as Chief Minister, accusing AAP of staging a drama where Kejriwal remains the de facto leader. The BJP argued that this display disrespects constitutional principles, as Atishi officially holds the office, not Kejriwal.

While AAP supporters defended Atishi’s decision as a respectful tribute to Kejriwal, critics within the BJP view it as a calculated move to keep Kejriwal in the public eye. The controversy highlights the ongoing power dynamics within Delhi politics, with Kejriwal’s shadow looming large over Atishi’s leadership. As the 2025 elections approach, the battle between symbolism and governance will likely intensify.

Atishi’s decision to leave Kejriwal’s chair vacant has sparked a fierce political debate in Delhi, with her supporters praising the move as a sign of loyalty, while the BJP views it as mere theatrics. As Delhi braces for the upcoming elections, the political symbolism surrounding Kejriwal’s absence is likely to remain a focal point of contention.

“This is a mockery of the constitution made by Baba Saheb.” — Amit Malviya, BJP IT cell chief, criticizing the symbolic gesture of leaving Kejriwal’s chair vacant.
