Yoon: The Coast Guard will “toughly suppress” Chinese illegal fishing

  • During the period of March 25 to March 31, the South Korean government seized five Chinese illicit fishing vessels.

In order to prevent Chinese vessels from engaging in illegal fishing during the blue crab fishing season, President Yoon Suk Yeol has directed the Korea Coast Guard to take severe action.

Yoon updated Park Saeng-deok, the head of a special patrol unit, on the Coast Guard’s efforts to stop Chinese vessels from engaging in illegal fishing in South Korea’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and waters close to the Northern Limit Line (NLL) during his visit to Incheon. Yoon also inspected the Coast Guard’s special patrol forces.

Illegal Fishing

Because “safeguarding maritime security” is closely tied to both national security and seafood resources meant for South Korean consumption, he asked officials to concentrate on it.

Yoon pledged to update patrol boats and officers’ gear, saying that maintaining the waters free of unlawful Chinese vessel activity defends “Korean people’s safety and national interests.”

During the period of March 25 to March 31, the South Korean government seized five Chinese illicit fishing vessels and expelled about 36 others from its territorial seas.
