Indian Fishermen Released

He claimed that on November 18th, in the evening, a delegation of fishermen had met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and informed her of the arrest. She sought their intervention to free the fishermen and their boats by speaking with the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka and the External Affairs Secretary in New Delhi.

According to him, the two national boats and all 22 fishermen have been released by an order issued by the Sri Lankan government. The Minister was thanked by him for her intervention.

After delivering the detained fishermen to the IMBL, Sri Lankan authorities are sending them home, and Mr. Rayappan is scheduled to meet with the Central Minister to discuss family matters.

In an appeal to Ms. Sitharaman, another fishermen’s leader P. Jesu Raja requested that the 118 boats that fishermen have had impounded in Sri Lanka since 2018 be released.

Additionally, he requested the release of a fisherman named Nambu Murugan who had been given a two-year prison sentence by a Sri Lankan court. Ms. Sitharaman is in Rameswaram, according to officials, to take part in the SVANidhi Outreach program.
