US Launches First Retaliation Against Houthis: White House

  • The US has said that its attacks in West Asia against militias backed by Iran are the start of a long-term response.
  • Four anti-ship cruise missiles that US forces claim were ready to launch on ships in the Red Sea.
  • Six other nations, backed the US-led offensive against the Houthis.

The US has said that its attacks in West Asia against militias backed by Iran are the start of a long-term response. The purpose of the Friday night raids, which targeted 85 locations in Syria and Iraq, was to exact revenge on the US for the deaths of three soldiers.

According to White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan, additional actions will be taken in response to attacks on American forces, and the strikes mark the start of a sustained reaction.

United States

Four anti-ship cruise missiles that US forces claim were ready to launch on ships in the Red Sea were hit during a self-defense strike on February 5.

The Iranian government forewarned the United States that action against the Iranian-flagged ship Behshad, which Washington believes is giving Houthi surveillance intelligence, could result in individuals pursuing such measures facing consequences.

Six other nations, including Bahrain, the Netherlands, and Canada, backed the US-led offensive against the Houthis. The prime minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, declared that the strikes were carried out in self-defense and that he would not hesitate to save British lives.

Iran is attempting to reduce American influence in the area, while the US is trying to exert pressure on Tehran to limit partner forces around the region.
