UN Gaza Ceasefire Vetoed by U.S. Under Global Pressure

  • The U.S. vetoed a UN resolution calling for an immediate, permanent Gaza ceasefire.
  • 14 of 15 UN Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution.
  • Israel recovered bodies of two hostages killed in the October 7 Hamas attack.

The United States blocked a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, citing its lack of condemnation of Hamas and failure to demand their disarmament.

Meanwhile, Israel announced it had recovered the bodies of two Israeli-American hostages, Gadi Hagi and Judy Weinstein-Hagi, from Khan Younis in Gaza. The couple was kidnapped and killed during Hamas’ October 7 attack.

Humanitarian Calls Grow Louder as U.S. Vetoes Gaza Ceasefire Effort

As humanitarian agencies warn of imminent famine in Gaza, the U.S. veto at the U.N. has sparked criticism for blocking what many viewed as a life-saving measure. The enclave of over 2 million residents has seen only limited aid deliveries following an 11-week blockade that devastated access to food and medical resources.

The United States insists that any resolution must address Hamas’ actions, particularly its refusal to disarm or release remaining hostages. Acting U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea stated that approving the current draft would “undermine U.S.-led efforts” toward a more comprehensive, negotiated ceasefire.

Other members of the Security Council, including allies of the U.S., have pushed back, saying that the humanitarian crisis requires immediate action regardless of political complications. Several leaders warned that the continued bloodshed risks destabilizing the broader Middle East.

The discovery and return of hostages’ bodies underscores the ongoing trauma from the October 7 attack and the difficult position Israel faces as it pursues military objectives in densely populated urban areas. Netanyahu’s public statement sought to reinforce national resolve, even as international calls for restraint grow louder.

The U.S. veto has intensified scrutiny over Washington’s role in the Gaza conflict, as it faces mounting pressure to balance its alliance with Israel against urgent humanitarian demands.
