The MDP and Democrats have amassed enough signatures, according to an MDP MP, to submit an impeachment motion in the Maldives Parliament. This comes after a violent day in the legislature during which Speakers were assaulted and proceedings were disrupted by government MPs from the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC).

Representatives from both parties make up the total of 34 MPs who have stated their support for the impeachment move of the president. The altercation happened during a special meeting to request parliamentary approval for ministers serving in the government of President Mohamed Muizzu.

Recently, the Maldives Parliament changed its standing orders to make it simpler for lawmakers to file a motion of impeachment. There are 56 MPs total for the MDP and Democrats, 43 from the MDP and 13 from the Democrats.

The Maldivian President may be removed from office with 56 votes, according to the standing orders of Parliament and the Constitution. MP Abdulla Shaheem Abdul Hakeem Shaheem of Kanditheemu and MP Ahmed Easa of Kendhikulhudhoo got into a fight that left Shaheem with head injuries.
