Katrin Jakobsdottir, the prime minister of Iceland, has stated her intention to step down from her position and run for president in the next presidential election.

It has not yet been established who would take over for her in the role that she has held since 2017. In a video message, Jakobsdottir said she had asked to be let go from her job.

Presidential Election

June 1st will see the election of Iceland’s new head of state, who will serve mostly as a ceremonial figurehead and not be involved in setting public policy.

The almost 400,000-person island nation is under uncertainty following recent volcanic eruptions that forced thousands of residents to evacuate indefinitely and increased pressure on an already stressed economy that is dealing with high inflation and skyrocketing borrowing rates.
