  • Joe Biden and Xi Jinping will have bilateral talks in San Francisco on the fringes of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
  • China has not yet confirmed Xi’s attendance at APEC.
  • Calming down foreign investors is high on Xi’s priority list for his US visit.

On November 15, President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping will have bilateral talks in San Francisco on the fringes of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, according to Kyodo News.

The Japanese news agency quoted an unidentified senior US official to report that final preparations are underway for what is expected to be Biden and Xi’s first face-to-face meeting in nearly a year.

Meeting in San Francisco

Although the White House has stated that the two leaders will meet, China has not yet confirmed Xi’s attendance at APEC. The two countries cannot rely on “autopilot” to hold a meeting, according to comments made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi last month.

Bloomberg News previously reported that Xi is also expected to be the honored guest at a dinner in San Francisco next week with leading US business executives.

Calming down foreign investors is high on Xi’s priority list for his US visit. According to recent surveys, there is a growing list of concerns that Western executives in China have about conducting business in China, including geopolitical tensions, a slowing economy, and employee detention.
