Over 1,300 people have died as a result of a massive and unusual earthquake that hit Morocco. The High Atlas Mountains near Oukamedene were the site of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake, and Moroccan officials predicted that the final toll could rise significantly.

The earthquake also had an impact on Marrakech, a famous British vacation spot, and rescue operations are ongoing in the region’s hilly terrain.

About 350 miles south of the tectonic plate boundary that separates the African tectonic plate from the Eurasia plate, which underlies much of Asia and Europe, is the site. These were the strongest earthquakes to strike the region in well over a century, and they are extremely uncommon.

A global relief head predicts that the following 48 hours will be crucial for saving the lives of earthquake victims. The next 24 to 48 hours will be crucial for saving lives, according to Caroline Holt, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ global head of operations.

Priority will be given to search and rescue operations, along with taking care of those who have survived. The IFRC is working diligently to support the Moroccan Red Crescent Society at the national level while they analyze the situation. Based on the requirements, the IFRC is prepared to deploy its emergency response teams within 24-48 hours.

By providing them with gifts and aid, the public is being urged by the former Lord Mayor of Westminster to give the Moroccan people “hope.” Hamza Taouzzale, a councilor of Moroccan heritage who recently visited the nation, stated that witnessing the devastation caused by the earthquake is “close to home.”

He noted that since people in the UK are aware of how abrupt and significant these events are and how rapidly someone’s life may change, they can serve as a “source of hope” at this time.

The British Red Cross has started an appeal for humanitarian aid to assist earthquake victims. According to the Interior Ministry of Morocco, there have been 1,037 fatalities and 1,204 injuries, 721 of which are life-threatening. In response to the earthquake, the nation has proclaimed three days of national mourning, during which time all flags will be flown at half-staff.
