Lula and Xi Unite Global South Against US Tariffs

  • Brazil’s Lula and China’s Xi discuss BRICS cooperation and resistance to US trade protectionism.
  • Talks follow Trump’s steep tariff hikes targeting Brazil, India, and China.
  • Leaders aim to boost ties in trade, technology, energy, and climate action.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has stepped up diplomatic engagement following US President Donald Trump’s imposition of 50% tariffs on Brazilian and Indian goods.

Xi emphasised that China and Brazil should serve as an example of unity, urging joint opposition to unilateralism and protectionism. The leaders also explored avenues for cooperation in health, energy, digital infrastructure, and space technology, alongside shared positions on global challenges such as climate change and the Russia–Ukraine war.

BRICS Solidarity Grows as Lula and Xi Respond to US Tariff Moves

Lula’s diplomatic outreach comes at a pivotal moment in global trade politics, as the US tariffs threaten to disrupt supply chains and challenge the export-driven economies of Brazil and India. The talks with Xi mark a continuation of Lula’s strategy to align with fellow BRICS members in countering the ripple effects of Washington’s trade measures.

China, Brazil’s largest trading partner, has deepened its economic footprint in Latin America through infrastructure investment and strategic partnerships. With two-thirds of the region already part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, the Lula–Xi call underscores Beijing’s intent to solidify influence while offering alternative economic channels to countries facing US pressure.

The leaders also reinforced the value of multilateral institutions in shaping a fairer global order. By supporting platforms like BRICS and the G20, both nations aim to amplify the collective bargaining power of emerging economies in international negotiations.

Beyond trade and geopolitics, Lula and Xi addressed environmental concerns and technological collaboration. This included potential joint ventures in clean energy projects and the use of satellite technology for climate monitoring — signalling a broader, future-focused dimension to their partnership.

The Lula–Xi dialogue signals a deepening alignment among BRICS powers, positioning the Global South to present a united front against economic pressures while advancing mutual growth and sustainability.
