Sexual maltreatment of youthful female players by more seasoned male mentors occurs “both ways” on the WTA Tour and defending against it should be important, Victoria Azarenka said at the U.S. Open on Saturday.
Azarenka’s comments to journalists came after Pierre Bouteyre, the previous mentor of French player Fiona Ferro, was charged in France on Thursday with assaulting and physically attacking her when she was a teenager somewhere in the range of 2012 and 2015, as per AFP.
Voice Against Abuse
Bouteyre’s legal counselor let AFP know that a relationship had happened however denied any intimidation. The legal counselor said the 50-year-old Bouteyre portrayed the connection as “a genuine romance story.” Azarenka, who sits on the eight-man WTA players gathering, said that fighting maltreatment was the gathering’s main concern.
