UAE to Replace Emirates ID with Facial Recognition Tech

  • UAE tests biometric ID system using facial recognition and AI.
  • Aims to replace physical Emirates ID cards within a year.
  • Zayed International Airport to use smart travel with no documents needed.

The UAE is preparing to overhaul its identification system by introducing advanced biometric technologies like facial recognition and fingerprint scanning.

The biometric shift extends to travel as well, with Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport launching a “smart travel” project that automates passenger registration using facial data.

UAE’s Digital Leap: Facial Recognition to Power National ID System

At the heart of this transformation is the integration of biometric and AI-driven technologies to streamline identification processes. The initiative marks a significant step in the UAE’s ambition to redefine public services and eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks.

The Federal National Council recently discussed the scope of these technologies, with minister Abdulrahman Al Owais highlighting their potential to enhance security and efficiency. By removing the dependency on physical ID cards, the UAE aims to minimize identity fraud and data duplication.

This digital transition isn’t limited to government services. In the private sector, facial recognition has already begun replacing conventional identity verification methods. Businesses will benefit from faster onboarding, secure authentication, and reduced reliance on physical documentation.

Airports serve as a live example of the UAE’s future-facing model. Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport is leading the charge with its smart travel program, allowing travelers to pass through gates using only biometric scans—eliminating the need for boarding passes or passports.

The UAE’s bold push into biometric technology not only enhances efficiency and security but also sets a global benchmark for digital identity innovation, paving the way for a future where identity is confirmed with just a glance.
