A mobile camera system has been installed in a long-term care facility for veterans close to Chicago to handle problems with residents walking off and tampering with their medical equipment.

Through a central interface, staff members can monitor up to 15 residents at once with the AvaSure system. The care center is run by Hines VA, and they believe that veterans of the armed forces have special medical needs that call for ongoing observation.

Long-term care services

When the video system is utilized in senior living homes, it reduces crises such as falls and self-harm by fifty percent. “Granny cam” systems have become popular in senior living facilities as a means of patient safety, despite privacy issues.

The VA projects that 80% of senior veterans will eventually require long-term care services, a statistic that indicates the fast-increasing number of older adult veterans.

According to a recent study, seniors who have experienced traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress disorder are particularly vulnerable to mild cognitive impairment.

The “Virtual Vietnam” initiative, a collaboration between the VA and Mynd Immersive, is a recent innovation aimed at assisting veterans with mental health issues. It permits veterans to revisit specific areas without the backdrop of combat horror.
