Amidst the integration of AI, IBM announces job layoffs

  • IBM has disclosed plans for layoffs in its marketing and communications sector.
  • 204 major businesses will have eliminated around 50,000 employees by the year 2024.
  • IBM’s restructuring initiatives are aimed at bringing its workforce into line with the rapidly evolving technological landscape.

In response to CEO Arvind Krishna’s declaration of a move toward AI integration, IBM has disclosed plans for layoffs in its marketing and communications sector. The computer giant’s typical job roles are facing uncertainty, which is why they made this change.

The choice to reduce staff is in line with a larger pattern in the technology sector, whereby 204 major businesses will have eliminated around 50,000 employees by the year 2024.

Job layoffs

Regarding the future of traditional work categories, the company‘s concentration on AI-led solutions has sparked discussions. A seven-minute meeting with CNBC was used to make the announcement.

IBM’s restructuring initiatives are aimed at bringing its workforce into line with the rapidly evolving technological landscape. The company has prioritized AI integration and workforce balance over major hiring drives, even in the face of incremental revenue growth.

Notably, IBM’s revenue from generative AI and WatsonX products doubled from the previous year, demonstrating the company’s commitment to AI-driven innovations.

IBM also recently announced a voluntary redundancy program in Europe, which demonstrates its transformative approach to restructuring. A significant portion of the reduction was directed toward roles in Enterprise Operations & Support (EO&S), Q2C missions, and Finance & Operations functions.
