After going flat in Queens following the West Coast trip, the Mets’ offense eventually came to life, rallying to win 9-8 on Thursday despite a horror eighth inning that saw Nationals’ shortstop CJ Abrams hit his first major-league grand slam and spark a five-run outburst.
The horrific eighth inning saw three Nationals hit by Mets pitchers, nearly giving a team at the bottom of the NL East a series sweep.
The Eighth Innings
With a 7-3 advantage going into the eighth inning, Brooks Raley, but Abrams hit the grand slam. Starling Marte singled, stole second base, Pete Alonso doubled to bring Marte home, and Jeff McNeil hit an RBI triple to give the Mets the lead in the bottom of the eighth.

After losing on Wednesday, Lindor doubled with two outs in the fourth. Even though Brandon Nimmo had two hits on the night, the Mets were in danger when Joey Lucchesi allowed two singles to be hit to left field in the sixth inning.
Thomas was scored by Robles’ fielder’s choice after Hunter gave up a single to Garrett to load the bases, cutting the Nationals’ deficit to 4-3 inning to bring home two runs.
Lucchesi pitched well up until the sixth inning, but the Nationals showed off potential ace pitchers Josiah Grey and Mackenzie Gore, whose ERAs are at 2.93 and 3.00.
During his five innings of work, Trevor Williams gave up nine hits, four earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts. A four-game series between the Mets and Atlanta Braves will begin on Friday. Ronald Acuna Jr., who is batting.363/.449/.569 with four home runs, 12 RBI, and 13 stolen bases, is the Braves’ star player.
Max Fried will likely be Buck Showalter’s opponent as David Peterson gets the start. The scheduled pitchers are Kodai Senga, Jose Butto, and Taylor Megill. Right-handers Bryce Elder, Charlie Morton, and Spencer Strider are likely to be used by the Braves.
