Spanish chess tournament saw Indian players being robbed

The 10th Chessable Sunway Sitges International Chess Festival 2023 was won by Indian Grandmaster Abhimanyu Puranik, however, the competition is making headlines due to a terrible event in which several Indian chess players were robbed.

The Indian players had a nightmare when their passports, money, and belongings were taken from the homes they were staying in.

Some Indian athletes were among the victims, including Arpita Mukherjee, Women International Master Mounika Akshaya, Grandmaster Sankalp Gupta, and International Master Dushyant Sharma.

GM Sankalp Gupta stated that on December 19, someone broke into his Sunway Apollo Apartment and took his roommate’s stuff, which included his laptop, AirPods, and other goods. At Chessbase India, the incident happened following a game.

My friend Mounika’s flat in Sunway San Jorge was broken into in the same manner later on December 22. The worst happened later that night: while my friends Arpita and Vishwa were asleep, there was another break-in at Sunway Arizona.

He went on, “Their cell phones and laptops were taken.” Subsequently, the same was verified in separate tweets by Arpita Mukherjee, Vishwa Shah, and Mounika Akshaya.
