Marchand returns to the swimming world championships

After breaking the final world record held by Michael Phelps, French swimmer Leon Marchand entered the world championships once more.

On the opening night of the competition in Fukuoka, he finished first in the men’s 400m individual medley with a timing of 4 minutes, 02.50 seconds.

Marchand, who wanted to use as little energy as possible without taking too many chances, qualified seventh-fastest in the 200-meter butterfly heats. He was in great form and was very funny over breakfast. Marchand’s participation in the 200m breaststroke is still up in the air, but he will race in the 200m butterfly semifinals later on Tuesday.

In the 200 butterfly, Japan’s Tomoru Honda qualified first, followed by Arbidel Gonzalez of Spain and Krzysztof Chmielewski of Poland. Australia‘s Ariarne Titmus, who triumphed in a thrilling matchup in the 400-meter freestyle for women, returned to her job shortly after.

In a timing of 3 minutes, 55.38 seconds, she won the race and reclaimed her world record by outdueling competitors Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh.

China‘s Qin Haiyang won his nation’s first gold medal in the competition by swimming the quickest time in the men’s 50m breaststroke heats. On Monday, she won the 100-meter breaststroke, and Zhang Yufei subsequently joined her on the podium after winning the 100-meter butterfly.

The Chinese team was able to forget about the World Championships in Budapest from the previous year, where they only managed to win one gold medal in individual swimming.

In the men’s 800 m freestyle heats, Australia’s Sam Short qualified fastest, followed by Tunisia’s Ahmed Hafnaoui and Germany‘s Lukas Martens.
