Djokovic Criticizes Wimbledon Fans for Booing During Victory Over Rune

  • Novak Djokovic accuses Wimbledon fans of disrespect during his win against Holger Rune.
  • Djokovic thanks respectful fans while criticizing those who booed.
  • Nick Kyrgios argues fans were merely supporting Rune, not intentionally provoking Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic has voiced his discontent with Wimbledon fans who booed him during his match against Holger Rune. Following his straight-sets victory, Djokovic thanked the respectful fans but criticized those who he felt disrespected him.

Despite Djokovic’s remarks, Nick Kyrgios offered a different perspective, suggesting that the crowd was simply supporting Rune. Kyrgios warned against provoking Djokovic, noting that such actions often backfire by motivating Djokovic to perform even better.

Djokovic and Kyrgios Differ on Wimbledon Fan Behavior

In a recent Wimbledon match, Novak Djokovic found himself at odds with a portion of the crowd, who he accused of showing disrespect by booing him. Despite securing a straightforward win over Holger Rune, Djokovic used his courtside interview to address the issue, thanking respectful fans while calling out those who he felt crossed a line.

Djokovic, a seasoned player with over two decades on the tour, emphasized that he has encountered hostile environments before and knows how to handle them. He suggested that while umpires can attempt to manage crowd behavior, there’s little that can be done to completely control it. The Serbian star expressed his preference to focus on fans who genuinely appreciate the game.

Conversely, Nick Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist, downplayed the notion that the crowd’s behavior was meant to antagonize Djokovic. Speaking to BBC Sport, Kyrgios argued that the fans were simply cheering for Rune, not trying to provoke Djokovic. He cautioned that attempting to rile up Djokovic often leads to him performing even better, as he thrives on opposition.

Kyrgios shared his own experiences of playing against Djokovic, noting that he avoids provoking the Serbian star. He admitted that trying to challenge Djokovic’s resolve usually backfires, referencing his own loss in the Wimbledon final as an example. Kyrgios emphasized that Djokovic doesn’t need additional motivation to showcase his best performance.

Despite differing opinions on the crowd’s behavior, both Djokovic and Kyrgios agree on the importance of focusing on respectful tennis fans. Djokovic remains committed to acknowledging genuine supporters, while Kyrgios highlights the risks of provoking a highly motivated champion.

“To all the people that chose to disrespect a great player, in this case me, have a gooooood night,” Djokovic said. This quote highlights Djokovic’s frustration with certain fans’ behavior, underscoring his belief that respect is fundamental in sportsmanship. The ensuing discussions by both Djokovic and Kyrgios about crowd dynamics and player motivation provide a deeper context to this sentiment.
