Australia struggles early in the 400-run chase

  • Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill of India scored a stunning century in the first ODI against Australia.
  • Rain interrupted play when India reached 79/1 in 9.5 overs, but the sun quickly came out again.
  • India has a fantastic potential to build an unstoppable 2-0 lead Wednesday in the 2nd ODI.

Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill of India scored a stunning century in the first One Day International against Australia, but Suryakumar Yadav gave India the most dramatic victory.

Yadav smashed four consecutive sixes off Cameron Green’s one over to notch his second consecutive ODI half-century and advance above 50 in just 24 balls. The final score for SKY was 72 runs off 37 balls, and India’s 399/5 was the highest total ever in an ODI match between the two teams.

India vs Australia, 2nd ODI

At the Holkar Stadium, India’s batters put on a display, with Iyer scoring a beautiful century before cramps and exhaustion caught up with him. He later established a 200-run stand with Gill, who quickly followed by reaching his sixth century in ODIs.

Having won the toss and chosen to bowl against India, Australia‘s acting captain Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood struck in his second over to cheaply dismiss Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Iyer, who came on at position three, got off to a quick start, hitting four boundaries in just 11 balls and putting together a fifty-run partnership with Gill in just 29 deliveries. Rain interrupted play when India reached 79/1 in 9.5 overs, but the sun quickly came out again.

India has a fantastic potential to build an unstoppable 2-0 lead Wednesday in the second ODI at Indore as the World Cup approaches. Before the return of more experienced players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Kuldeep Yadav for India’s final official encounter before the World Cup, players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav must leave a lasting impression.

Even without four elite players, including captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India was still able to win the opening ODI with ease. They now have a strong chance of winning the series at the Holkar Stadium, which is famed for delivering high-scoring games.

Josh Hazlewood, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Starc were among the notable absentees for Australia in the first game, as they were for India. The skipper, Pat Cummins, said they might be ready for the third game on September 27 in Rajkot. The run-a-ball 45 by Josh Inglis showed promise, but the middle order needs to be more dependable.
