To bring immersive shopping experiences within the metaverse, Walmart has teamed up with Unity, a real-time 3D content production engine.
Creators of Unity software may now combine physical product sales into real-time 3D experiences across over 20 metaverse platforms by directly integrating Walmart’s commerce application programming interfaces (APIs) into their games and applications. This relationship was made possible by Walmart.
Walmart and Unity
In September 2022, Walmart initiated its metaverse presence by introducing two immersive experiences on the Roblox game platform. Walmart declared in September 2023 that it planned to increase its commercial participation in “virtual worlds.” Three of these Unity-developed experiences have effectively used Walmart’s commerce APIs.
One of the experiences enhanced by Unity is “House Flip,” a mobile game created by fun-gi in which users can buy real-world equivalents of in-game things.
Another instance is the game “Avakin Life,” created by Lockwood Publishing, in which users can obtain virtual versions of the newest clothing they own or get the virtual item as a bonus when they buy the physical item. In this virtual world, Walmart also introduced CoreMood Collective, its first virtual clothing line.
Walmart and Unity are working together to create platform areas with immersive commerce features in preparation for future brand integrations. Walmart’s project is seen by Unity as a driver for innovation in metaverse commerce, with over 1.1 million developers using its editor each month and an average of 3.6 billion downloads of Unity-developed apps worldwide.
