First Minister of Scotland, Humza Yousaf, has determined he will not pass a vote of confidence and will step down on Monday. Last Thursday, Yousaf terminated the power-sharing arrangement between his party and the Greens, saying that the cooperation agreement had fulfilled its intended purpose.

The government’s decision to abandon a target to reduce carbon emissions by 75% by 2030 and claim it was impossible caused tensions with the Greens to escalate last week.

With the backing of the opposition Labour and Liberal Democrat parties, the opposition Conservatives presented a motion of no confidence in Yousaf.

Following the resignation of longtime leader Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP had a turbulent year. Yousaf sought to restore the party’s reputation around stable administration in light of the anticipated UK-wide election in the second half of the year.

As the most successful and prominent political party in Britain, the Scottish National Party was elected to the Scottish parliament with a landslide in 2011 and went on to win 50% of the Scottish vote and 56 of Scotland’s 59 Westminster districts in the UK election of 2015.
