Russia must be stopped, the head of NATO argues

  • A Russian win over Ukraine might give China more confidence, according to NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
  • If Russia’s aggression in Europe continues, other countries will come to see that it is effective to use force to subdue American interests.
  • The security of the region is at risk as NATO has been moving closer to the Asia Pacific.

A Russian win over Ukraine might give China more confidence, according to NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. According to Stoltenberg, if Russia’s aggression in Europe continues, other countries will come to see that it is effective to use force to subdue American interests.

In addition, he emphasized the geopolitical ramifications of a Ukrainian defeat by speculating that if Russia prevails, China might invade Taiwan.

NATO

The views expressed by Stoltenberg are consistent with those of CIA director William J. Burns, who claimed that China now poses a greater long-term threat to the US than Russia did.

When questioned about the current NATO military exercise, Steadfast Defender 2024, a spokesman for the Chinese defense ministry called NATO a “walking war machine”.

With plans to span the next six months across the transatlantic region, the exercise, which got underway on January 24, is the biggest NATO exercise since the Cold War.

The security of the region is at risk as NATO has been moving closer to the Asia Pacific and advancing bloc confrontation under the pretext of the nonexistent “China threat.” An inquiry for comment from Business Insider submitted after regular business hours was not immediately answered by NATO personnel.
