Scientific Reason for the Earthquake in the Turkey and Syria

The Earthquake in Turkey has shaken the world with crumbling buildings and people suffering from loss of relationships. Why did this earthquake occur and what caused it to cause so much damage?

To know what causes such a large earthquake, it is necessary to know the changes taking place under the earth. There are many tectonic plates under this earth and these plates are moving at some point, these plates meet each other and the two plates are trying to find their way.

Reason for the Earthquake

But they say that the part where they meet is a false line when there is friction and it rubs against each other. Thus the converging plates at some point separate from the false line region with great energy and the resulting vibration is called an earthquake.

Well, what is the cause of this earthquake in Turkey and why is it such big damage? A similar move in Turkey is called the Strike-slip fault. It is said that the reason for this earthquake is the slip that occurred in the Anatolian Plate, which is located in Turkey, and the Arabian Plate, which is located in Syria.

These two plates continued to try to move in a vertical direction but failed and the Anatolian Plate began to move horizontally. It is because of this that the earthquake in Turkey was the largest on earth.

The first earthquake in Turkey was recorded at 7.8 on the Richter scale. Ordinarily, Richter is used to calculating any lunar seismic wave above the Earth, for example, 5 Richter magnitude is 10 times 4 Richter magnitude, 4 Richter magnitude is 10 times 3 Richter magnitude, similarly, 5 Richter magnitude is 100 times 3 Richter magnitude, 6 Richter magnitude is 1000 times 6 Richter magnitude.

Damage will occur only if an earthquake is reported above the limit. But it is not just the Richter scale that determines the impact, the topography and environment are also important factors. Population and nearby buildings all determine vulnerability.

  • The first earthquake in Turkey was not so deep in the earth that the tremors were high.
  • This earthquake was recorded at a depth of 28 kilometers from the earth, which is more than the impact of an earthquake of the same magnitude in a deeper area.
  •  And this information was found and said by the people of Britain Open University.

The epicenter of the first earthquake was in the Ghazi Aintab region of Turkey located on the border with Syria. The impact of this earthquake was high in Turkey and Syria. The areas like Ghazi Aintab, Diyarbakir, and Adana in Turkey and Aleppo, Latakia, Hama, and Tartus in Syria have suffered the greatest impact.

Apart from this, the earthquake was also felt in Lebanon and Cyprus. The people of the area have felt the tremors more than 100 times since the first earthquake. It is considered to be the largest earthquake in recent times in the world.
