  • Akharas postponed the Amrit Snan but later resumed after a reduction in crowd size.

A deadly stampede at Prayagraj’s Sangam Ghat during the Mahakumbh 2025 on Mauni Amavasya left at least 15 devotees dead, with officials still verifying the exact toll.

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep grief and monitored the situation closely.

Mahakumbh 2025: Stampede Sparks Outrage Over Crowd Management

The Prayagraj administration had expected record-breaking attendance at the Mahakumbh, with an estimated 10 crore devotees visiting. Despite prior arrangements, the surge in crowds on Mauni Amavasya led to chaos. The breaking of barriers on the Sangam routes triggered the deadly stampede, highlighting the challenges of managing such a massive event.

This incident draws comparisons to the 2013 Mauni Amavasya stampede at Prayagraj railway station, which claimed 36 lives. Then, as now, questions arose over administrative preparedness. However, officials maintain that the situation is now under control, with ongoing efforts to ensure safety at key ghats.

Security measures had been ramped up ahead of Mauni Amavasya, with thousands of police personnel deployed. However, the sheer scale of the gathering made it difficult to manage, and authorities struggled to prevent overcrowding. The Special Executive Officer for the Mahakumbh stated that while some people sustained injuries, the situation was not as severe as initially feared.

With weeks remaining until the Mahakumbh concludes on February 26, officials are reviewing safety protocols to prevent further incidents. The political blame game has already begun, with opposition leaders demanding accountability. Meanwhile, devotees continue to arrive in massive numbers, reinforcing the cultural and religious significance of the event.

The tragic stampede at Mahakumbh 2025 underscores the urgent need for improved crowd management and safety measures at large religious gatherings. As investigations continue, the focus remains on preventing further incidents and ensuring the safety of devotees.

“Faith brings millions together, but responsibility ensures their safety.”
