Tamil Nadu CM Urges Diplomatic Action for Fishermen’s Release

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has urgently called upon External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to intervene diplomatically regarding the recent arrests of 37 fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. Stalin stressed the need for immediate action to secure the release of these fishermen and their seized boats, highlighting ongoing hardships faced by Tamil Nadu’s fishing communities.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of revitalizing the Joint Working Group established to address bilateral issues, underscoring the need for a lasting resolution to prevent further disruptions to livelihoods.

Challenges and Diplomatic Appeals: Tamil Nadu’s Fishing Community in Focus

In addition to seeking the fishermen‘s release, Stalin also addressed logistical challenges, noting that permission for salvage boats to retrieve seized vessels from Sri Lanka is still pending. He urged proactive consideration of humanitarian concerns, including allowing Tamil Nadu fishermen associations to provide essential support to jailed fishermen in Sri Lanka. The Chief Minister’s letter underscores Tamil Nadu’s persistent efforts to protect the rights and livelihoods of its fishermen amidst recurring incidents of arrests and intimidation by the Sri Lankan authorities.

Moreover, Stalin emphasized the humanitarian aspect, urging permission for Tamil Nadu fishermen associations to visit their incarcerated counterparts in Sri Lanka. This step, he argued, is crucial to provide essential support and comfort to the jailed fishermen. The Chief Minister’s persistent efforts highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Tamil Nadu’s fishing community, urging sustained diplomatic efforts to address these recurrent issues effectively.
