Hindu Safety in Bangladesh: Modi’s Urgent Call for Action

  • PM Modi met Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus at the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.
  • He raised concerns over attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh following Sheikh Hasina’s ouster.
  • Modi emphasized a stable, inclusive Bangladesh and urged restraint in inflammatory rhetoric.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bangladesh’s interim Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, marking their first interaction since Sheikh Hasina’s ouster.

The meeting also addressed Yunus’ recent remarks about India’s Northeast region in China, which sparked controversy. Modi urged Yunus to avoid rhetoric that could strain bilateral ties.

Modi-Yunus Talks: India Pushes for Minority Safety & Stability in Bangladesh

In the wake of Sheikh Hasina’s departure, Bangladesh has witnessed rising tensions, particularly for its minority communities. Reports of violence against Hindus have raised alarms in India, prompting Modi to bring up the issue in his first official meeting with Yunus. India has historically been vocal about minority rights in Bangladesh, and this discussion reinforces its stance on safeguarding regional peace and inclusivity.

The political shift in Bangladesh has created uncertainty regarding India’s long-standing ties with its eastern neighbor. Sheikh Hasina’s government maintained strong relations with New Delhi, especially on security and economic fronts. However, with Yunus at the helm, India faces new diplomatic challenges, particularly regarding border control and strategic cooperation.

PM Modi also underscored India’s concern over Yunus’ recent statements about the Northeast in China. Given the sensitivity surrounding India’s northeastern states, such remarks could complicate relations between the two nations. Modi’s call for diplomatic restraint signals India’s intent to maintain stability in an already volatile regional landscape.

Despite these challenges, India remains committed to fostering constructive engagement with Bangladesh.

India’s outreach to Bangladesh under Yunus’ leadership marks a crucial phase in regional diplomacy. Modi’s engagement signals both concern for minority safety and a pragmatic approach to maintaining bilateral ties amid political shifts.
