Why Melatonin May Not Solve Your Sleep Problems

  • Melatonin supplements mimic a natural hormone but aren’t a standalone sleep solution.
  • Good sleep hygiene and habits are essential for effective results.
  • Expert advice stresses consistency, environment, and screen-free evenings.

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body in response to darkness, helping regulate the circadian rhythm. While supplements can be useful for specific conditions like jet lag or temporary sleep disturbances, they are not a long-term solution for chronic insomnia.

According to Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard- and Stanford-trained gastroenterologist, the effectiveness of melatonin depends largely on supporting factors like consistent sleep routines, reduced screen time, and a calming sleep environment.

Melatonin Isn’t a Magic Pill: Why Better Sleep Requires More Than Supplements

Modern lifestyles often disrupt our natural sleep-wake cycles. Artificial lighting, irregular routines, and constant digital exposure reduce melatonin production, leading to increased sleep disorders. This environment makes it harder for the body to recognize nighttime, delaying the internal “sleep switch.”

Melatonin supplements can be helpful in resetting this rhythm temporarily. However, overreliance can mask deeper sleep hygiene issues. For example, someone taking melatonin while still binge-watching shows in bed is unlikely to see long-term results.

Experts advise building a sleep-friendly environment. This includes maintaining a cool, dark bedroom, going to bed and waking up at the same time daily, and avoiding stimulants in the evening. These habits strengthen the body’s natural melatonin response and make supplements more effective if needed.

Additionally, mental wellness plays a key role. Anxiety, stress, and racing thoughts often interfere with falling or staying asleep. Addressing these through mindfulness, therapy, or relaxation techniques is just as important as any supplement when seeking quality rest.

True rest requires more than a supplement—it demands commitment to healthy habits and self-care. Melatonin may help, but sustainable sleep comes from within.
