The festival, which the culture ministry named the finest in the country in 2010, attracted more than a million attendees for 13 years running, from 2006 to 2019.
When thousands of people attempted to capture Sancheoneo via holes carved over the surface of a large ice river, the festival previously made news throughout the world. Following a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the festival last year drew 1.31 million attendees.
As a representation of peace and national security, Hwacheon has developed into a vital economic force in the county, bringing in about 100 billion won (US$76.5 million) in direct economic consequences every year. The festival also benefits nearby eateries, lodging establishments, and producers of other amenities and mementos.
