In 2023, Malayalam cinema suffered a loss of about Rs 300 crore. However, the industry recovered with the release of Aattam (The Play), the crime thriller Abraham Ozler by Midhun Manuel Thomas, and Malaikottai Vaaliban, starring Mohanlal, directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery.

Several films were released in February, including Girish AD’s Naslen and Mamitha Baiju-starring Premalu and Darwin Kuriakose and Tovino Thomas’ Anweshippin Kandethum.

Massive box office

Premalu earned praise for its straightforward but powerful storytelling and made Rs 40 crore worldwide on an inexpensive budget of Rs 8 crore. It made Rs 130 crore globally and became the year’s first blockbuster.

Premalu, Bramayugam, and Manjummel Boys, three Malayalam films, made a splash this year when they made their global box office debuts. The films captured the interest of Indian audiences as well.

With a domestic opening of Rs 7.6 crore, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life) took the stage in theaters and grossed a staggering Rs 47 crore in its first week of sales.

The first quarter of 2024 saw the release of three Malayalam films that broke records for the biggest box office gross: Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham, and Premalu.
