The War in Ukraine Leaves Millions of Children Without Education

  • Five years of disrupted schooling have severely impacted Ukrainian children’s education and mental health.
  • Over 4.6 million children face barriers to education, with 2 million affected by school closures.
  • Limited resources and psychological trauma further hinder learning and social development.

The ongoing war in Ukraine has caused a devastating education crisis, leaving millions of children without access to proper schooling. Many students in frontline areas have been forced to rely on online education, but frequent power outages and poor internet access make it difficult for them to learn.

The psychological impact of this crisis is equally concerning. Many children are experiencing trauma, anxiety, and depression, with limited resources available to address their mental health needs.

Ukraine’s Children Face an Education and Mental Health Crisis

The war in Ukraine has not only destroyed schools but also shattered the dreams of millions of children. More than 30% of the country’s educational facilities have been damaged, leaving many students without a safe place to learn. Online learning is not a viable alternative for many due to technical issues, further deepening the education gap.

Teachers report alarming cases where students in grades 5-6 are unable to read or write properly, as they missed critical years of foundational learning. In many rural areas, children are lagging significantly behind their peers, creating an urgent need for targeted educational interventions.

Beyond academics, children are struggling emotionally due to constant air raids, displacement, and the loss of loved ones. Many experience severe anxiety and difficulty concentrating, which affects their overall cognitive development. However, limited access to mental health services means that these issues often go unaddressed.

Organizations like Plan International are working to provide children with safe spaces, educational support, and psychological aid, but the scale of the crisis requires long-term investment. Without urgent action, Ukraine risks losing an entire generation to the devastating consequences of war.

The war in Ukraine has taken a severe toll on children, both academically and emotionally. Urgent intervention is needed to rebuild education systems, provide mental health support, and ensure that children have a chance at a stable future.
